Today, thanks to computerized hand-held ultrasonic wall-measuring instruments, science has taken the place of art and guess work.
Though this hull design is outdated, it is still used for smaller ships of length less than 120 meters. In this design there is a plate floor every 3.05 meters and a frame every 1 meter. The frames run tranversally to the hull structure.

The photo's attached shows the hull's inside without deck and in various stages of completion. Note the fair plating - no fairing used - just paint. The boat shown was my own TT24 with stretched cabin top and own designed fin keel.

My choice is definitely a 40 to 44ft steel yacht, but what thickness the hull? Most second hand examples seem to be in the 4 to 5mm range. I have seen a couple built using 6mm plate. I don't want to lie awake at night worrying about re-enacting 'Titanic!'.
